Malta Mayhem ft. Johnny Ace

Kinda Funny Game Jam - Grand Prize Winner

Kinda Funny, a crew of Games Industry personalities turned YouTubers, put on the first ever Kinda Funny Game Jam and as a big fan, I had to participate. I ended up making a 3rd-person hero shooter starring one of the group’s characters, Johnny Ace who is a champion tennis player known to reside in Malta. To take the action to his home town, I referenced actual Malta landmarks to turn the island into an interesting arena for multiplayer mayhem to take place! The Kinda Funny crew and community loved the references including a very… interesting victory screen. Check out the reaction video below!

The Lost Castle of Maleventum

Dungeons & Dragons Game Jam

I enjoy dungeon-crawling games, so I tried my hand at the Dungeons & Dragons sponsored Game Jam. I didn’t end up winning, but I made an action-adventure dungeon crawler with a focus on environmental puzzles. I created a narrative with a backstory cinematic and environmental story-telling through NPCs and other content that can be found during the adventure. The experience is balanced for a party of 4, so it’s a daunting task by yourself, but I was really happy with the result. Certainly a long list of features and polish points I didn’t get to in time for the deadline, but it was a lot of fun trying new concepts!

Esports

SC Center

My first foray into esports and journalism was working on a Major League Gaming (MLG) show dedicated to StarCraft 2 tournament coverage and other relevant esports news such as professional player movement and major game updates. I was specifically assigned to cover the IGN Pro League.

Semi-Pro Gaming League

For the Semi-Pro Gaming League (SPGL), we worked to put on a StarCraft 2 tournament for anyone within North America. We created regional tournaments that led up to the Grand Finals. I directed our Northeast regional efforts, working directly with players to coordinate games, running the tournament live stream, and directing on-camera talent. Our region was also responsible for hosting the Grand Finals and shortly after the tournament, our top 2 players were taken in by professional teams!

Collegiate League of Legends

While at Stanford, I helped to create the first official LAN club where competitive gamers of all sorts could come together and play whichever game they’re interested in. Initially we held tournaments with prizes for games such as StarCraft 2, Super Smash Bros., and Halo, but interest in other games quickly grew. Once we had enough players interested, we began a League of Legends tournament series with teams competing on a weekly basis. While coordinating our own tournaments, I also worked with Riot Games to setup Stanford with Collegiate League of Legends, giving our players the chance to compete and officially represent our school!

Games Journalism

I love following and digging into the Games Industry to really understand what’s going on behind the scenes and what goes into making my favorite games. My natural curiosity drove me to try my hand at games industry journalism. I’ve written 100+ freelance articles from daily news to major features. I also enjoy writing on my own when a topic particularly interests me. As a product strategy guy, the different approaches used by Xbox and PlayStation this generation was particularly interesting.

Podcasting

Listen up.

My wife Eva and I are always finding fun new ways to pass the time! Recently we made a podcast where we talk about the movies and TV shows that we’re watching, what’s going on in our lives, and other random news we want to talk about. Enjoyed putting my audio production and editing skills to the test and once in a while getting to mention the games I’m playing too, even if my wife doesn’t care so much…
